Welcome to Inventors4Change

Inventors4Change brings together the projects that the UdiGitalEdu group of the University of Girona has been developing in India since 2013. The common objectives of the different initiatives are: (1) to explore new ways of learning and teaching with the help of Creative Computing and Maker Education; (2) to train teachers in schools for underprivileged children in the Bangalore area; (3) to connect these schools with schools in other countries to encourage children to co-create.

The GlobalChangemakers initiative starts again


From this October 2019 to March 2020, GlobalChangemakers is connecting again schools in several countries, promoting education for global citizenship, connected learning, and creative computing. 

During this school year, the theme that the children will investigate is “Climate Action”, related to UN Sustainable Development Goal 13

The participants in this edition are 20 classes of primary and secondary schools, from 5 countries, making a total of about 600 students.

Inventors4Change - InventEUrs - GlobalChangemakers


For the last two years, thanks to a grant from the European Commission, the Inventors4Change team together with other European partners implemented the InventEUrs project, which has been replicating the Inventors4Change ideas, first in a network of European schools (Spain, Italy, Romania and UK) and then opening the initiative to the whole world thanks to the new GlobalChangemakers digital platform, one of the main results of InventEUrs.

From now on, GlobalChangemakers will be the platform that Inventors4Change will use for connections between teachers.

Here you can see a gallery with the children's final projects of this 2019 edition, in which more than 1000 children from 7 different countries have participated.

Learning from and with old people


This is the fifth edition of the Inventors4change program. This school year the chosen topic that children will investigate is: "Learning from and with old people".

Children from 8 schools in 3 different countries (Catalonia, Colombia and India) will explore this topic, get to know each other, and carry out digital collaborative projects.

In the photo above these lines you can see the participating students of the El Petit Plançó School. And below, the participating students from Institut-Escola de Besalú and Parikrma Schools (Jayanagar and Nandini Layout). Soon we will also introduce you to the participating students from Colombia.

Colombia joins Inventors4Change


Our team attended the EdukaTIC 2017 Conference in Cali, Colombia. We gave a keynote about Makers & Changemakers and we conducted a workshop on Maker Education for teachers. 

In Colombia we also visited some stakeholders like schools and maker spaces, and the result is that three schools in the area of Cali will join our project from the next school year. The three schools belong to Comfandi, a non-profit social enterprise that provides health services, education, subsidy, housing, recreation and culture.

So our initiative is from now implemented in three countries (Spain, India, Colombia) as Inventors4Change, and in 4 more countries (Italy, Romania, Spain and UK) as InventEUrs.

Final digital stories, Inventors4Change 2015-16


During the 2015-16 academic year, children from participating schools in India and Spain have been investigating the refugee crisis. First they used a blog to express their views and findings. Then the teams were presented to each other through videos, and some videoconferences between India and Spain were held. Finally the children used Scratch to invent and create digital stories and animations on the refugee crisis. In these stories, backgrounds were designed by children in India, and the characters were designed by children in Spain. Then they remixed the projects and coded the animations. 

In this post we share a video of one of those awesome stories. It was mostly created by kids at Institut de Gurb. You can see the rest of the final stories here (the 8 projects in the first two rows are the final stories).

Team-based workshop on underwater robotics with kids of Parikrma


Besides promoting virtual collaboration of schools, an important part of the work of our team also consists of providing training to schools and conducting workshops and activities with children. On our last stay in South India we conducted activities for 8 schools.

In all the activities we have focused on promoting creative learning through a constructive and innovative use of technology.


The most spectacular activity was the underwater robotics workshop, where kids from 5 Parikrma Centres for Learning, divided into 4 teams, spent three full days to build from scratch a remotely operated underwater robot using low-cost materials such as PVC pipes, wood, etc. The students customized their own design over the different phases of the workshop.

Apart of increasing the interest of students for science and technology, and of promoting engineering skills, capabilities and values, the idea is that once the activity is completed, every team understands that with teamwork, effort and a good working strategy, every problem can be overcome.

We were very pleased with the results of the workshop. Students exceeded our expectations, and even taking into account some limitations of materials, they managed to put and drove fully functional robots into the water.


This workshop would not have been possible without the invaluable help of the staff of Parikrma, and without the facilities that The Koramangala Club offered us. Thank you so much to both!

Rescue robots at Parikrma


Some days ago, as part of our workshops for children at Parikrma, we conducted an activity inspired by a technological challenge proposed by the University of Girona: TecnoRepte 2016.

Children had to imagine an earthquake scenario, where some people got trapped in a big rupture of the soil. It is necessary to send a rescue team but it is dangerous to descend within the rupture. So the challenge is to build some artifact easy to assemble and move along the broken ground to facilitate the evacuation of people and also provide food and water to survivors down there.


The TecnoRepte in Girona is a challenge that lasts for some months, but in India we proposed it as one-session challenge. So children did not have time to think about complicated structures such as bridges, but in no time they designed some awesome robots that can move through a cable that has previously been thrown from side to side of the break. For the challenge we used the material that we had in that moment: LEGO WeDO Robots.

Once the cable solution was decided by consensus, we were inspired by the LEGO Sky Parade for MIT Mini Maker Faire that Amos Blanton from MIT Media Lab shared with lots of details. From that point, and with very little guidance, the children began to create prototypes and in no time the robots were moving hooked to the cable.

The result of the activity was simply amazing! We would have had great videos of the workshop but there were recurring power cuts in Koramangala that afternoon and we were working almost in the dark. The photos are ok thanks to flash! :)

Virtual exchange between Koramangala and Gurb


Today some kids of Parikrma Centre for Learning in Koramangala held a videoconference with kids of Institut de Gurb.

They have been talking in English, have introduced themselves, have spoken of their respective countries, and even have taught each other words and expressions in their mother tongues: Kannada, Tamil and Catalan.


This is the stage of the project where teams begin to know each other before they develop collaborative projects on this year's topic: the refugee crisis. So far each school had been investigating the topic, and sharing opinions and thoughts on our KidBlog.

Let's the adventure begin! (again)


Today, as part of the fieldwork that our team develops in India, we have started our creative learning activities at Parikrma Centre for Learning in Koramangala, Bangalore.  

It was great to meet again with the children and teachers. This is the third consecutive year that we collaborate with Parikrma Humanity Foundation, an organisation that educate over 1500 children from 69 slum communities and four orphanages in Bangalore.

Today a group of 16 students from different classes were introduced to the project. We made 4 teams of 4, and they already started blogging and commenting on this year's topic (the refugee crisis) in our KidBlog.

These next few days, before Indian children start their collaborative work with Catalan children, we will conduct some activities to promote creativity, critical thinking and teamwork; all with the help of creative learning technologies (such as educational robotics, Scratch, Makey-Makey and many more).

Children in Salt have started posting


Sixth-graders at Veïnat School in Salt have already started publishing their contributions on our Inventors4Change Kidblog. They have done their work based on public photographs of refugees, which have been examined and discussed. Then they debated among themselves, shared their opinions and proposed solutions. Finally they published their posts on the blog.

They say such beautiful things as:
We think that this people don’t have to be there, having cold. 
We think it is sad to see people alone, without their family. 
The refugees are not guilty of this problem. 
We think that they have the same right that the other people to be happy. 
Our solution is give them a home where they can be happy, without having to worry for the problems and for the war in their countries.

Visit our project page at WISE ed.hub


While our students in India and Spain are researching on the refugee crisis topic to then share their thoughts through our new kids blog, we have good news to share: our project has been highlighted by WISE ed.hub, an initiative to help practitioners share their knowledge and experience, building bridges between challenges and solutions. 
The ed.hub is a platform where experts and practitioners support each other by engaging in conversations on particular education issues. It allows thinkers and doers to connect and explore new collaborations and partnerships to tackle educational challenges. 

The ed.hub also showcases innovative projects and successful practices that have had a transformative impact on education and societies. Projects featured here cover a variety of fields, a wide range of sectors and all regions of the world.

Inventors4Change starts again!


For the third consecutive year we started again the Inventors4Change project. New schools have joined the initiative, and we have many news to tell you. 

Last July we presented the project at DML 2015 Conference in Los Angeles and all the feedback and ideas we heard there will help us improve the quality of the initiative. 

Again we got financial support from the Development Cooperation Office of the UdG, and this will allow us continue our fieldwork in South India. We will conduct workshops for children and teacher trainings in some schools for underprivileged children.

Characters and backgrounds come together


Indian teams have been working very hard on their backgrounds. Projects of the Catalan teams have already been reinvented, and now their characters have backgrounds where the animated stories will be developed.

Designing characters for their interactive stories about gender equality


After being introduced to the issue of Gender Equality, the participating children in Catalonia are already designing characters for the interactive stories they will create with Scratch. After that, their counterparts in India will create the backgrounds.

Back on track! Video presentations


We have restarted the project a few weeks ago, now with two new schools: Parikrma Centre for Learning in Jayanagar (Bangalore, India) and Institut de Gurb (Catalonia).

During the first days teams in Catalonia and India were presented to each other through photos and videos. This year's topic is Gender Equality, and children are already starting to create characters for their animations using Scratch.

15 minutes of glory


We have exciting news to tell you about the second year of Inventors4Change. These include new schools, new partners and new methodologies. But before explaining this news we want to tell you that our project participates in the "15 minutos de gloria" contest (15 minutes of glory).

Presenting Inventors4change at #JPE14


Last Saturday we presented our project at the VI Jornada Catalana de l'Ensenyament de la Programació a Primària i a l'ESO (#JEP14). This conference is held annually at Citilab in Cornellà (Barcelona), where primary and secondary teachers interested in introducing robotics and programming in schools meet and present their innovative projects.

We presented a brief summary of our pilot project with four schools, and showed some of our first results. Next presentations at Girona Talent and Scratch@MIT 2014.

Pilot project is over. But that's not the end of the story :)


After some busy weeks of virtual exchanges and collaborative inventions, we are glad to announce that the pilot project has finished. We have so many things to share with you, and we will do it during next weeks.

Today we want to share one of the already finished Scratch projects. In this case it's a story about children's rights made by a group of children from India, with the help of children from Catalonia.

Awesome people and projects


Although our project is young and is still a pilot, our posts and our profiles on social networks have generated curiosity and interest among many people and projects from many diferent parts of the world.

Roya Mahboob @RoyaMahboob 
Roya Mahboob is an Afghan entrepreneur and businesswoman. She founded and serves as CEO of the Afghan Citadel Software Company, a full-service software development company based in Herat, Afghanistan. She has received attention for being among the first IT female CEOs in Afghanistan, where it is still relatively rare for women to work outside the home. On 18 April 2013, Roya Mahboob was named to TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People In The World for 2013 for her work in building internet classrooms in high schools in Afghanistan and for Women's Annex, a multilingual blog and video site hosted by Film Annex. This was the 10th anniversary of the TIME special edition. The Women's Annex platform give the women of Afghanistan and Central Asia a platform to tell their stories to the world.

Founder of #pencilmountain and girls advocate. Hannah Godefa is UNICEF National Ambassador for Ethiopia. She is 16 years old and now lives near Toronto, but she campaigns tirelessly to raise funds for her native land. Hannah spearheaded the international movement called Pencil Mountain in which she helped collect school supplies for Ethiopian children

Leshell Hatley @Leshell
Leshell is a passionate computer engineer, educator, and researcher who continuously combines these three attributes to create innovative approaches to teaching students between that ages of 3 and 73. She has logged over 15,000 hours teaching African-American and Latino elementary, middle, and high school students in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) concepts throughout NY, NJ, and DC. Eric Rosenbaum @ericrosenbizzle
